Lake Cootharaba

Lake Cootharaba is a magnificent waterway and part of the Noosa River system.

It is the largest lake on the Noosa River. It is also the gateway to the upper Noosa River and the Noosa Everglades.

The Lake is popular for kayaking, canoeing, sailing, wind-surfing, kite surfing and fishing.

Also, the lake is superb for kids, as it is very shallow for a long way out.  So it’s very safe for swimming and a variety of water sports.

Stunning, old paperbark trees line the lake flanked by the expansive Great Sandy National Park.

Take a relaxing stroll along the lake, relax and unwind in this very quiet and peaceful space.

Geography of Lake Cootharaba

The lake is approximately 10km wide and 5km wide and its average depth is only 1.5metres.

The Noosa River flows through the lake. It enters from the north via the Noosa Everglades and through the south on to Noosa Heads.

Boreen Point

In addition to the lake, Boreen Point is a delightful little settlement on a raised point of land overlooking its western shores.

The village has a number of attractions including local galleries, lakeside beaches, parklands as well as the iconic Apollonian Hotel.

This historical hotel was first licensed in 1868 and has since become a historical landmark.

The Apollonian Hotel is the ideal place to relax and enjoy lunch after a day trip to Lake Cootharaba and Boreen Point.

Planning your visit

Lake Cootharaba and Boreen Point is an ideal day trip from Little Cove. It is only 20km from Noosa and less than half an hour scenic drive.

If planning to fully enjoy the lake and undertake some water sports and lunch at Boreen Point, it’s ideal to plan the whole day.

For guests of the Discovery Tours, Noosa Everglades Discovery Tour, Lake Cootharaba is on the way to the Everglades.

For guests of the Kanu Kapers Noosa Everglades and Lake Cootharaba canoeing tours, Lake Cootharaba can also be experienced.

So to enjoy this experience, you can either drive to Boreen Point or enjoy a canoeing expedition or Noosa Everglades tour.

These are all great options for guests wanting to explore the breath of Noosa Hinterland experiences.
